There is only one message here that matters: "We should have left long ago. It was a mistake to stay this long, and it was a mistake for me to delay evacuation until now. But I am committed to correcting that mistake." Whatever this is, it is not that.

This is incredibly defensive. twitter.com/Snowden/status…

We went in to Afghanistan with clear goals? We were not there for nation-building? This speech is already not going well.

Looks like the official Biden-Afghanistan livestream is going about as well as expected.

This can't possibly be right, can it? Is it a mistranslation? This sounds an awful lot like Macron's priority when the Taliban are in the midst of door-to-door reprisals is covering his flank for some election, not saving lives. twitter.com/AFP/status/142…

The human cost of the White House's choice to delay our withdrawal for political purposes is absolutely stunning. twitter.com/nytimes/status…

The @nytimes just reported that the White House, concerned about the appearance of a "domestically damaging" "Saigon moment," ignored "weeks" of warnings that the evacuation operation should be started sooner: nytimes.com/2021/08/15/us/…

Hard to believe the lowball figures DOD is reporting here when independent analysts are hearing 800(!) passengers successfully crammed on a single aircraft. Let's hope they outperform: twitter.com/vcdgf555/statu…
864
There have been thousands of Afghan civilians trapped and panicking on the civilian side of the airport with their commercial jets unable to take off all night, and DOD is crowing about flying out just 500 people? People that could be on that other side stamping emergency visas? twitter.com/PeterAlexander…

afghanistan fell in like 10 days and here we are having used up our national quota of the word "insurrection"

@magi_jay But I do agree: decades-long wars in foreign lands with no plan and for no benefit, followed by a disastrous pull-out that leaves everyone worse-off than they were before shows that "America"—as politicians understand it—is, in fact, "back." Nothing partisan to that history.
868
For what it's worth, leaving is the right choice—just made decades too late. Terrorists are criminals, not states. Declaring a fruitless war when we had the sympathy of the world—rather than an international police action—will be remembered as an era-defining catastrophe.

@JaredMGordon @JoeBiden If you think this is a Biden v. Trump thing, you're really missing the scale of this two-decade tragedy.
