🤬This is an utter disgrace, and humiliation for the UK. British QC flown into prosecute Jimmy Lai and 8 others. scmp.com/news/hong-kong…

As a fan of ⁦@DominicRaab⁩ I wish he’d lead from the front on China. Today’s statement was a hyped up re-presentation of months-old policies + strong rhetoric. An effort to kill backbench support for the Genocide Amendment. Me for ⁦@Telegraphtelegraph.co.uk/news/2021/01/1…

Scratching my head at @DominicRaab today 👉Said we "shouldn't outsource" genocide judgment to the courts 👉But said only judges can rule on genocide This is not consistent.

For the uninitiated, the UK’s policy for decades has been that we WILL NOT use the word “Genocide” and WILL NOT act under the Genocide Convention unless the courts determine it. But this is not possible through the UN because of China’s veto. Amendment offers a way through.

Raab speech: - Due diligence guidance for businesses operating in Uyghur region - Fines for businesses which don’t comply with Modern Slavery Act - Public sector exclusion Slavery businesses - Review of export controls

Rumours of some kind of #Uyghur Protection Act! This will be far more meaningful for Uyghurs than the changes trailed over the weekend about the Modern Slavery Act. But still no sign of anything about genocide. So we must keep pushing. telegraph.co.uk/politics/2021/…

Another long day working on the #GenocideAmendment - grateful for amazing colleagues and constant encouragement from #Uyghur and #HK friends who are suffering. “I’d rather be ashes than dust”.

Why is this not “incitement to violence” when tweeted by Chinese State media @Twitter?
784
From @Nus_Ghani in support of the #NoGenocideTrade amendment. The UK says genocide is a matter for judges not politicians. Fine. So let’s pass this amendment and allow them to rule on China’s atrocities. thetimes.co.uk/article/the-uk…

Spoiler: these changes to the Modern Slavery Act have been in the pipeline for ages and will do v little to help #Uyghurs Have to call it our: this is a window dressing to see off the #NoGenocideTrade rebellion. theguardian.com/politics/2021/…

Fantastic to serve on this Commission with ⁦@benedictrogers⁩ who has done such superb work. Thank you ⁦@WilliamJHague⁩ and other senior party figures who realise that our China policy must now change. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9…

🔥WOW. The US has just massively upgraded their relationship with Taiwan. Nobody did more than @marykissel to make this happen. The UK should follow. The Taiwanese aren’t even allowed to call their London office an Embassy. Why? You guessed it folks. state.gov/lifting-self-i…

Thanks ⁦@MaajidNawaz⁩ for having me. Please, go to genocideresponse.org and write to your MP. Ask them to back the #GenocideAmendment

Twitter finally deleted this. Presumably embarrassed by the obvious double standard of “considering the wider context” re: Trump incitement to Capitol Hill violence but not millions of #Uyghurs in concentration camps. Thanks to everyone who reported. twitter.com/lukedepulford/…

Results are in: @Twitter is fine with @ChineseEmbinUS celebration of anti-Uyghur atrocities. It’s time Twitter executives were dragged to parliament to answer for this disgraceful insult to the #Uyghur people. arstechnica.com/tech-policy/20…

Have deleted tweet about @BorisJohnson statement on HK. Might still be happening but clearly confusion between @Number10press and the lobby. Sorry to have raised expectations - was acting on reliable intel.
