To summarize, don't worry about XLRs and audio interfaces if you're just starting out. A USB microphone around $100 or lower will do just fine for recording and VC purposes if that's what you're aiming to do.

..then dropping $750+ USD on a SM7B, Cloudlifter and a Focusrite isn't what's gonna get you there. There are many instances with people that have these setups sounding very painful due to one specific thing: clipping.

This can either be done with audio filters on OBS, or if you want the compression to be reflected over Discord as well to sound good on other people's streams too, check out software compressors (like Voicemeeter) if an outboard one (like a GoXLR) isn't an option for you.

No matter how pretty your mic is, clipping always sounds bad. So, what the solution?
Simple, get a decent USB mic and look into compression. It adds so much to the audio quality of your stream. You will be audible even when you're speaking softly and you can yell and be A-OK.

Also, the Elgato Wave:3 (a USB mic for under 200 bucks) solves a ton of the audio issues that are common with streams (the clipguard is fantastic). Definitely something to check out if you have the budget for it!

If you want to improve your audio further down the line, that's great! Splurge on a nice XLR mic if you want to! If not, a USB mic will suffice just fine for both streaming and recording.
For recording: find a good room with minimal echo
