Today, on Lunar New Year, I turned 60. Normally I absolutely hate receiving birthday wishes, but turning 60 is something—I’m a little taken back that I somehow survived to reach such an age.
78
This year, I’m embarking on projects involving factors that hadn’t been part of my life so far, including NFT drops and the release of a tiny game machine. So I pray to the Buddha and myriad gods to keep me going just a little longer.
79
As I start my NFT art, let me revisit my attitude.
80
① I think of NFT art simply as art.
81
② NFT art is fundamentally different from stock or commodity.
82
③ Murakami.Flower NFT is art, pure and simple.
83
④ In the moment of its creation, the meaning of an artwork is hard to grasp.
84
⑤ Art historical relevance of an artwork is set by the artist and their environment after the fact.
85
⑥ An artist’s true value is put to the test after their death. Therefore, they often cannot be thoroughly evaluated in their lifetime.
86
⑦ Once the true worth of an artist is established, their work could become extremely expensive.
87
⑧ The existence of Murakami.Flowers extends beyond blockchain.

Bonnō, or kleshas, in Buddhist tenet, are mental states that disturb and trouble the mind and body, hindering wisdom, and there are supposedly 108 of them. 👉
91
👉 In Buddhism, the cause of human suffering is considered to be one's own bonnō, and the path to liberation and nirvana has been sought by grasping and overcoming the causes of bonnō. 👉
92
👉 Of the 108 bonnō, the three that cause the most suffering are greed, anger, and ignorance. 👉
93
👉 Greed is bottomless desire. In Buddhism, greed is considered to be unfulfillable. No matter how wealthy or beautiful, humans always want more. 👉
94
👉 Anger is amplified when greed is not satisfied. When a one is driven by anger, one is left with regrets.👉
95
👉 It is my hope that Murakami.Flowers can be the symbol of such an idea. 🌸

727 is one of my magic numbers. This number comes from a 300 x 450 cm painting I made in 1996, three years after the birth of Mr. DOB in 1993. 👉

1. I am currently making the roadmap for Murakami.Flowers.
98
2. I think this roadmap may be a little different from those put forth by the forerunners of NFT art. (Or maybe it’s no different.)
99
3. In any case, I intend to present my plans one by one.

4. Murakami.Flowers is a work in which artist Takashi Murakami’s representative artwork, flowers, are expressed as dot art evocative of Japanese TV games created in the 1970s. 👉
