The sky has a subtle, but effective, impact on lighting. Use it to help your character fit into the environment (same is true for grass!).

On lighting composition: be careful with secondary lights on outdoor scenes. Too much can make a character feel like a cut-out.

Pictorial on subsurface scattering. Only strongly apparent from strong perpendicular light sources and heavy cast shadows. Don't abuse it!
